ABC offers social skills classes for a variety of ages and skill sets. Each group has weekly goals and participants will learn from a variety of mini lessons about each topic. The groups are a combination of lessons, activities, and an opportunity to play and socialize with a group of similar aged peers.

Back to School: What to Expect this Fall?
AGES: 6-9 RATIO: 1:3 COST: $400 (10 weeks) FUNDING OPTIONS: SSAH & OAP Funding

DESCRIPTION: This social group will focus on the transition of back to school (online or in person) after the COVID-19 closure. Our topics will range from school expectations, maintaining friends, COVID-19 specific changes and general changes we will throughout the Fall Semester. Using different teaching techniques such as lessons, role play, large and small group discussions, games and more, we will develop skills to help the transition as easy as possible. We ask for parental communication throughout this social group to guide our lessons based on the challenges the children face throughout the transition. Group members will have many opportunities to share their experiences and ideas with the group and learn from one another.
Making and Maintaining New Friends

DESCRIPTION: Making new friends can be challenging for everyone. This social group will focus on developing new skills to create and maintain new friendships in a safe and kind manner. Group members will use a variety of methods such as role play, videos, mini-lessons, worksheets, and more to learn ways to make new friends and keep old ones. We will tackle the basic steps of introductions with new people and learn about topics such as inviting friends to activities, internet safety, good and bad influences and more.
The Importance of Communication

DESCRIPTION: In this social group, we will tackle the topic of conversations. Each week we will have a topic about either verbal or non-verbal ways to communicate with others. Members of this group will learn the ways to start a conversation, accept the word “no”, read body language and the general rules of conversations. Using mini-lessons, group conversations and videos, we will learn ways to have conversations. After each new topic, the members will engage in role-play, group activities and games to practice these methods.
Problem Solving: Stop, Think, Solve

DESCRIPTION: Everybody has problems, but sometimes we need help learning how to handle them the right way. This social group will be all about problem solving. We will use different activities to learn the material including mini-lessons, role-play, large and small group discussions, games and more to become better problem solvers. The group members will learn how to identify the problem, develop appropriate solutions, decide the best course of action, and reflect on the situation. We will learn to problem solve using a variety of skills such as compromise, give and take, and learning to accept loss.
